There are 3,389 coffee shops in NYC, and tech startup MassiveHealth found that New Yorkers drink 6.7 times more coffee than the average American living in any other city. America’s first espresso machine, built in 1902 and imported from Italy, can be seen at Cafe Reggio in Greenwich Village, which plied New Yorkers with their first espressos and foamy cappuccinos in 1927.The coffee culture in NYC was shaped by Greek and Italian immigrants initially, and it is hard to pin down one iconic method of brewing because of the wide range of methods used in 3,389 different cafes. Also, Howard Schultz, the CEO who charted Starbucks course to global domination, was born and raised in Brooklyn.
Funnily enough NYC is perhaps better known for the cup the coffee is served in rather than a specific roasting method or brew. Introduced in 1963 to appeal to Greek immigrants and coffee shop owners in New York City, the Anthora cup has become a classic symbol for coffee in the city.
